National Garden Clubs Inc. Marks
National Garden Week June 1-7, 2008
Week Coincides With NGC-Habitat for Humanity Effort
In Support of Home Builders Blitz
May 20, 2008 - ST. LOUIS--National Garden Clubs Inc., the largest volunteer organization of its type in the world, joins gardening enthusiasts across the U.S. in celebrating National Garden Week, June 1-7. The St. Louis-based organization, which offers extensive educational programs and resources to promote gardening and environmental responsibility, unites 6,300 member clubs and more than 209,000 individual members across the U.S.
“National Garden Week is a great opportunity to call attention to the important contributions that gardeners make to the beauty and environmental health of our communities and our nation,” says Barbara D. May, president, National Garden Clubs Inc. “In addition, it’s a great time to remind those who have not yet adopted the gardening habit that it’s one of the most enjoyable and therapeutic activities that nearly everyone can take part in, indoors or outdoors, year-round.”
Coincidentally, one of the NGC’s key ongoing efforts—participation in a volunteering and fundraising partnership with Habitat for Humanity International—will peak during National Garden Week through Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz project. The blitz, an accelerated building effort conducted nationwide, takes place May 31-June 7. NGC members will provide the new Habitat for Humanity homeowners with container gardens and assist in planting low-maintenance, environmentally friendly landscaping.
National Garden Clubs Inc. is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1929. Information on the NGC’s extensive range of educational, philanthropic and networking projects is available on the organization’s Web site at www.gardenclub.org.
